Aviation Founders Poll: Your Answer Is Instrumental

Olive Ann Beech: Aviation’s First Lady

Picture this: Wichita, Kansas, in the roaring 1920s. A young woman named Olive Ann is working as a bookkeeper, but there's this fire in her eyes. A fire that's about to light up the world of aviation.

Back in 1917, Olive Ann married this guy Walter Beech, a dreamer obsessed with flying. He starts his own company, Travel Air, in 1925. Then, out of nowhere, four years later, his sleek "Mystery Ship" stuns everyone, winning the famous Thompson Trophy race in '29. Walter's at the controls, but make no mistake— this win puts them both on the map.

Here's where Olive Ann's genius kicks in. Walter was the flashy pilot, but she's the real mastermind. She turns that trophy win into a fundraising whirlwind, drumming up cash and buzz for their little company in a way nobody saw coming.

1932 rolls around, and they make their move: Travel Air becomes Beech Aircraft, with Olive Ann as the backbone – Secretary-Treasurer. Her sharp mind for numbers and her way of connecting with people, that's what built the foundation for everything Beechcraft became.

But then the world starts getting dark. It's the late '30s, and war clouds are brewing. Olive steps up in a huge way – she takes full control as Walter focuses on the designs. "Positive Mental Attitude," that's her motto. Come 1945, her team has built over 7,600 planes for the Allies! Talk about strength under pressure.

The war ends, and the jet age is here. Olive gives the green light to amazing new planes, like the Bonanza – an icon that pilots still drool over. Then, in 1950, when Walter passes away, she makes history becoming the first woman to lead a major aircraft company. Let's be real, that wasn't an easy climb in those days. Still isn’t.

By 1980, the industry has no choice but to bow down. Olive is honored with the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy, one of only three women to ever get it. And the final proof of her impact? Beechcraft sells to Raytheon for over $800 million – a figure made possible by decades of Olive's vision and sweat.

From bookkeeper to the undisputed queen of the aerospace world... Olive Ann Beech proves it's about grit, nor background. It's about believing in yourself like nobody else will. Day in and day out, never giving up, even when the odds are stacked against you. We are at %40 of our potential when we hit the wall - keep pushing past.

Her story reminds us that even the most ordinary beginnings can ignite extraordinary success. With enough guts and determination, you can fly higher than anyone ever imagined. Olive Ann Beech showed us the way, and is a continual reminder on preconceived ideas about men and women. Keep an open mind, always!

Ace Update

After-hours, Ace stumbles in from a long mission. The hangar maintenance crew came in bright eyed and bushy tailed, wondering where the tree branches came from in the gear, saying only “Classic Ace…” No one would ever be there to tell the tales from just another ISR Mission that somehow went as planned, until it didn’t.. Next time, next time.
